A little bit about Xlendi and the Maltese Islands
Xlendi is a one time traditional Gozitan fishing village – a hotch potch of buildings some old some new, some built in the rush after the 2nd world war that really should come down now!
Xlendi is one of Gozo’s two main holiday resorts having 22 bars and restaurants catering for all of your needs.
English is spoken widely almost as a first language, Gozitan people are happy, friendly and very generous.
These little Islands are steeped in History!
The original Maltese are said to be Sicilian Stone Age farming families settling on the Islands in around 4000BC.
The Islands have been home to the Phoenicians, Romans invaded by Turks and Arabs each of these civilisations have left their marks on the Architecture and language.
Due to The Islands strategic military position offering natural harbours and defenses' The French and more recently the British have had large involvement.
The whole of Malta was awarded the George Cross in April 1942 – ‘for the gallant and brave people of Fortress Malta’.
Malta and her Islands achieved independence from Britain in 1964 and are now a protectorate, Queen Elizabeth II is the nominal Queen of Malta.
In 2004 Malta joined the EU,The Euro is her currency - in itself a huge achievement for the small archipelago.
The main religion is Catholic – there are 365 churches across Malta and Gozo, some very fine and beautiful examples always worth a look.
The Island of Gozo is reached by a Ro-Ro ferry taking 25 minutes to cross the 4.5 kilometer stretch of water that separates the Island from Mainland Malta, passing the smaller Islands of Comino and Cominetto both largely uninhabited.
